Multipoint Locking Mechanism (MPL)
A UPVC or Composite door is normally fitted with a multipoint locking mechanism, comprising a mechanism and a gearbox. The mechanism has several ‘bolts/ hooks’ which engage in to the door frame. The lock allows or prevents the operation of the gearbox / mechanism allowing the door to open and close.
The gearbox is a complex unit that is operated by a door handle (if fitted) and a lock cylinder. Every time you open and lock the door, the gearbox and mechanism are operating. As you can imagine, they do 1000’s of cycles and are the most common parts to fail causing you to be locked out or locked in!
What to watch out for?
The door handle should be horizontal. You will know the normal feel of how your door / handle operates. Gearboxes / Mechanisms can fail without warning, however, normally you will feel a change in the way the handle moves/ door locks prior to it failing. The handle may feel slack or limp (not in a horizontal position). In this case, you should consider maintenance before it fails.
Auto-shut / Slam shut mechanisms: these are fitted to composite doors. The doors may have a pull handle (solid, non-turning). As soon as the door shuts, the locking mechanism actuates, the door will only open when the lock is turned.
